Teen Service and Bridging Ceremony

Don't miss the first-ever Bridging Ceremony at High Street UU Church! Who's bridging? From what to what? Our four 2008 high school graduates are ceremonially bridging the span between teenage and young adulthood.

For years, our Teen Service has been on Mothers' Day. Think of the Bridging Ceremony as the Teen Service with a twist. All the Teen Group members who wish will still participate in this service; there will simply be more focus on blessing our graduates as they move into the next momentous phase of their lives.

The graduates, Akangbe Assongba, Charlotte Barat, Andy Patrick and Kathleen Richardson will reveal some highlights of their time at High Street.

Coffee hour will be a reception in their honor.

Everyone, again, please bring "finger foods".

Please be present to be a part of this service and offer your congratulations.

We will "Share the Plate" with Prevent Child Abuse Heart of Georgia (PCA)

Dear Friends,

Check out the May 12 issue of TIME magazine on newsstands today! On page 48, amongst TIME's 100 Most Influential People in the World, you will find the second of two ads running as part of Phase II of Unitarian Universalism’s National Marketing Campaign.

The UUA full-page ad, which carries the headline, "When in Doubt, Pray. When in Prayer, Doubt." includes an offer for a free DVD to introduce Unitarian Universalism to newcomers.

The UUA's national advertising campaign is supported through the generosity of Unitarian Universalist congregations who contributed to Association Sunday, held last fall.

The funds raised helped produce online marketing in TIME, the Time.com Religion Pages, and the UUA's new “UU Perspectives” essays.

Thank you for your exceptional generosity!

Children's
Religious Education

May 18

The Bridging Ceremony for Akangbe, Andy, Charlotte and Kathleen is an intergenerational service so that children can witness things to come for themselves and so that RE facilitators can be present for their former protegees.

All Religious Education youth: Please bring the pennies you have been collecting for children in Northwest Pakistan. Our Pennies for Peace drive is drawing to a close for this year, and we want YOUR contribution to be included! Thank you.

Jane Donahue, Director of Religious Education

Adult Religious Education - Sunday May 18th

SPIRIT OF LIFE A Tapestry of Faith Curriculum

The chorus “Spirit of Life” (#123 in Singing the Living Tradition) has been called the “Amazing Grace” of Unitarian Universalists. In this new, web-based curriculum, the Rev. Barbara Hamilton-Holway (author of the popular Evensong series) blends reflection and meditation, sharing and hands-on activities into a creative exploration of Unitarian-Universalist spirituality using the words of this popular hymn. Come prepared to embark on a journey inward and outward, exploring the depths of your own personal spirituality and being challenged to new efforts in “creating a better tomorrow”. The class will continue through May. Contact Class Facilitator E Arlen Goff at 319-9242 or by email at arlengoff@cox.net for more details.

(2008 Adult Religious Education Schedule)

Class begins, at 9:30 AM (sharp!). For more information, Contact class facilitator Arlen Goff via email at arlengoff@cox.net or by phone at 478-319-9242.

The High Street Nursery needs YOUR help.

Our current paid childcare worker, Kathleen Richardson, will be leaving us the beginning of May as she begins preparations for college.

We need a reliable adult over the age of 21 with one or more years of general childcare experience to care for children of all ages, but primarily babies up to two year olds for about three hours on Sunday mornings (9:30 am to 12:30 pm with a small break in between) and children of all ages for a few hours during church-wide special events. Pay rate is $10 per hour.

Some type of Red Cross training or at least a willingness to complete such training is preferred. A background check will also be required. We are trying to search outside of the church so as not to infringe upon members/friends becoming an integral part of the High Street community. If you know anyone that would be a good prospect and is interested please call the Nursery Chair, Vanessa Sullivan, at (478) 714-0151 and leave a message or send an email to willolea39@hotmail.com with that person’s name, phone number and the best time to contact if by phone or if you have any other questions.

We also need volunteers that are willing to cover when the childcare worker is unable to cover an event or is sick on a Sunday. Volunteers are also necessary for events when the ratio of children to adults requires it. All persons that want to work with the children will be required to provide a background check if they have not already done so to comply with High Street’s Children’s Religious Education Safety Policies. If you are willing to serve this important role to ensure that childcare is available when needed for all church-wide events please see contact information above. If you have a preference for Sundays or events please indicate this and if you have a preference for certain events please indicate this as well.

Vanessa Sullivan, Nursery Committee Chair at willolea39@hotmail.com

Ever been to ....

Transylvania

Last chance to join me and several other UUs from all over Georgia on our pilgrimage to Transylvania this summer (July 30-Aug 11.) We will be visiting the citadel where Francis David was martyred, the tomb of King Sigismund, and various other sites of Unitarian historical interest. The trip will culminate at the Unitarian World Gathering on Aug. 9. There will also be chances for cultural exchange, as we will be spending several nights in the homes of our fellow religionists halfway around the globe. The total cost of the trip is $1895 (see attached itinerary fro further details) excluding airfare. If there is any interest, please let me know. The deadline for registration is May 31. Contact Fred Howard fredhoward435@hotmail.com or call 478-361-6305.

Thanks,
Fred
